At Nvidia’s GTC 2026 conference in March, French artificial intelligence company Mistral introduced Forge, a platform designed to let enterprises build AI models trained on their own internal data.
The announcement is notable not because it adds yet another model to an already crowded market, but because of what it prioritises. Forge is explicitly built to move enterprise AI systems away from general-purpose intelligence and towards organisation-specific knowledge—embedding internal documentation, processes, and decision frameworks directly into models.
Mistral has already begun working with organisations including ASML and the European Space Agency, signalling that this approach is aimed squarely at complex, high-stakes environments where generic AI falls short.
The timing is telling.
After two years of rapid adoption of generative AI tools, many enterprises are encountering the same limitation: models that are powerful, but insufficiently grounded in how the organisation actually operates.

A broader industry shift towards contextual AI
Mistral’s approach is not happening in isolation.
Across the industry, there is a growing focus on context-aware AI systems. Chinese technology company Xiaomi, for example, recently committed at least $8.7 billion to AI development, with a focus on systems designed to support autonomous agents rather than traditional chat interfaces.
The direction is consistent: AI is moving away from general-purpose tools towards systems that are deeply integrated into specific organisational environments.
This reflects a broader realisation.
The challenge is no longer building models that are capable. It is building models that are relevant and operationally aligned.

In the first phase of generative AI, advantage was tied to model capability—larger models, more data, better performance.

The real bottleneck in enterprise AI adoption

Most organisations already possess vast amounts of institutional knowledge. But that knowledge is rarely structured in a way that can be easily operationalised by AI systems.

From tools to AI infrastructure
What emerges from this transition is a redefinition of AI’s role within the enterprise.
AI is no longer simply a tool that employees use. It is becoming part of the infrastructure through which organisations operate.
Unlike traditional software, this AI infrastructure is dynamic. Models can be continuously refined using feedback and new data, allowing them to evolve alongside the organisation itself.
Over time, this creates systems that increasingly reflect the organisation’s own logic, processes, and accumulated experience.

Mistral’s Forge announcement does not just introduce a new product. It signals a broader transition in enterprise AI.
