Suki and MEDITECH Deepen EHR Integration

Voice-Enabled AI for Healthcare

14 July 2025

On July 1st, AI healthtech innovator Suki announced an expanded integration with MEDITECH, one of the most established providers of electronic health record (EHR) systems in North America. The collaboration makes Suki the first company to embed ambiently generated clinical notes directly into MEDITECH's Expanse EHR, allowing clinicians to dictate and document medical encounters more efficiently and intuitively than ever before.

In an exclusive interview with MoveTheNeedle.news, Heather Miller, Suki’s Vice President of Partnerships for Platform, said this isn’t just a matter of convenience—it’s a step toward reclaiming time, reducing burnout, and improving the quality of care. And for healthcare systems grappling with staff shortages and digital transformation mandates, it’s an opportunity to enhance productivity while maintaining a human touch in clinical interactions.

Who Are Suki and MEDITECH?

Founded in 2017, Suki is a fast-growing healthtech startup known for its Suki Assistant, a voice-enabled AI that streamlines documentation for physicians and care teams. It leverages natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and ambient listening to reduce the administrative load on clinicians. Suki has been recognized for its ease of use, cross-specialty adaptability, and deep integration with various EHR platforms.

MEDITECH (Medical Information Technology, Inc.), based in Massachusetts, has been developing healthcare information systems since the 1960s. It’s best known for its EHR system, MEDITECH Expanse, which is widely used by community hospitals, rural health systems, and specialty clinics. Unlike some competitors, MEDITECH focuses on usability and affordability, enabling smaller and mid-sized healthcare providers to benefit from digital transformation.

What the Integration Means

In September 2024, Suki first joined MEDITECH’s ecosystem, giving its users access to Suki’s ambient documentation tools. Now, Suki Assistant is natively integrated into MEDITECH Expanse, offering clinicians real-time voice-to-text functionality and automatic note generation directly within the EHR.

In simple terms, this means doctors can now speak naturally during a patient consultation, and the AI listens, understands, and writes the clinical note for them—accurately and in real-time. No more scribbling or typing during visits. No more spending hours after shifts finishing paperwork.

“Since our initial rollout into MEDITECH Expanse, adoption amongst clinicians has grown quickly,” said Miller. “Suki has already been used in over 100,000 patient encounters by more than 1,000 providers on MEDITECH Expanse, which speaks volumes about its real-world impact.”

This deeper integration uses MEDITECH’s documentation APIs to embed Suki’s capabilities directly into the EHR, eliminating the need for toggling between systems or copying and pasting notes. “It’s a first for MEDITECH and its users,” Miller added.

Why Ambient AI Matters in Healthcare

Clinical documentation is one of the biggest sources of physician burnout. According to the American Medical Association, physicians spend nearly twice as much time on EHR tasks and desk work as they do on direct patient care. That imbalance has sparked growing demand for ambient AI—technology that passively listens, interprets, and records interactions without disrupting the patient-clinician relationship.

Suki combines ambient listening with robust voice-to-text dictation, making it possible for clinicians to:

- Dictate directly into any field within MEDITECH Expanse,

- Automatically generate structured notes during consultations,

- Eliminate redundant manual data entry, and

- Improve the quality and timeliness of documentation.

“One of our biggest priorities is creating technology that is essential to nursing staff,” Miller emphasized. “Instead of drowning in paperwork, we want to enable nurses to focus on bedside care, patient advocacy, and the human connections that AI simply cannot replicate.”

Real-World Results: Citizens Memorial Hospital

One of the standout case studies from this integration is Citizens Memorial Hospital (CMH), a rural healthcare system serving 130,000 residents in southwest Missouri. After a thorough evaluation of AI-powered tools, CMH chose Suki for its seamless integration with MEDITECH. The results were impressive:

- 41% reduction in after-hours documentation,

- Over 1,500 ambient notes generated in just two months,

- 80% adoption rate across five clinical specialties.

By automating documentation, CMH gave its care teams more time for patients—and for themselves.

Looking Ahead: Order Entry and Expanded Roles

Suki isn’t stopping at note-taking. The next feature on the roadmap is ambient order entry, which will allow clinicians to verbally place orders (labs, medications, imaging) during a visit, with automatic insertion into the EHR. This eliminates another time-consuming administrative task and minimizes the risk of missed or forgotten orders.

Suki also plans to expand into home health, international care, and mobile workflows, reflecting the increasingly diverse and decentralized landscape of modern healthcare.

“Documentation is just the start,” said Miller. “AI can and should support everything from clinical decision-making to administrative workflows. The goal isn’t to replace providers but rather to give them tools that let them focus more on care and less on clicks.”

Suki’s approach—building assistive, invisible technology—sets a strong precedent for how AI can enhance care delivery without creating new layers of complexity. By integrating deeply into EHRs like MEDITECH’s, they are showing what it looks like to make AI feel native, not bolted on.

What’s Next for the Partnership?

“We’re just getting started!” Miller said. “Our partnership is expanding beyond documentation as we integrate into mobile workflows and broaden our support for different care roles such as nursing, home health and international care. Together, we’re setting a new standard for what AI-powered documentation and workflow support can look like through a long-term partnership built on shared vision and impact.”

As both Suki and MEDITECH continue to evolve, this collaboration exemplifies how strategic integration—backed by a shared commitment to usability, efficiency, and care quality—can transform the clinician experience.
